Daiwa Shokudo Ten-Go Branch/ダイワ食堂天五店
Tenjinbashisuji 5-chome, Osaka.
As I walk the endless arcade, time begins to rewind.
A red lantern, a wooden door.
“Daiwa Shokudo – Ten-go Branch.”
This is the neighborhood’s kitchen.
I go for the famous “Ebi-hira.”
Shrimp flattened, breaded, and fried golden.
The sound of oil crackles from the kitchen.
That scent—it hits both my nose and my nostalgia.
One bite.
…Crisp.
The batter’s light, but the shrimp is rich and heavy.
Great as is, but a splash of sauce makes you crave rice.
It’s nostalgic, but somehow new.
This is the taste that survived Osaka’s streets.
Phew.
No frills—but it gets to you.
On the way home, I swear I’m standing up straighter.
